Life Legacy

Linda Yvette Manigault was born on July 19, 1951, to Claudius and Lacy Manigault Sr.; the eighth of eleven children in Greeleyville, SC. Following the death of her mother her oldest sister Helen (Leroy) Paisley raised Linda and her sisters in Queens, NY where she completed her secondary education. She matriculated to Manhattan College and received a degree in secretarial sciences, taking a job at Procter and Gamble. Linda also began a passionate pursuit of modeling; she then took a position as an executive secretary at NBC on the Johnny Carson Show.
Linda married soon after and relocated to Norfolk, VA and started a family. She also started her social work career taking a position with the Red Cross. She worked nine years with the City of Virginia Beach social services department. Linda garnered an invaluable education in helping people in need. Linda attended Norfolk State University, completing her undergraduate degree with honors. She then realized her calling as an educator, at Georgetown Primary School, as a third grade teacher. She was honored as Chesapeake’s First Year Teacher of the Year, 1991.
Education played a major role in Linda’s life; she achieved her master’s degree in education from Regent University. After 18 years of elementary school, Linda accepted a position as a professor in education at Hampton University. During this time, Linda decided to continue her education; attending Nova Southeastern University to obtain her Ph. D in Education. She completed all of her course work and was in the process of submitting her thesis for approval.
She was a member of New Union Chapel AME church for over 30 years; she was as a devoted member and leader. During that time she held several positions including: Marshall to the Virginia Annual Conference, Pro Tem [president] of the Steward Board, Sunday School Superintendent, member of the Women’s Missionary Society, YPD coordinator (local), Youth pulpit coordinator, Vacation Bible School Director, member of the Mass Choir, and helped start the tutorial program at New Union. Committed to community service, Linda believed in helping in the moment anyway she was needed.
Linda was preceded in death by: her parents Lacy Manigault Sr and Claudius Manigault, her siblings Julia Canty (Joseph), George Manigault, Robert Manigualt, Gwendolyn Manigault. She is survived by: children, Stephanie Evette Claggion and Howard Steven Claggion Jr (Sabrina); siblings Helen Paisley (Leroy), Lacy Manigault (Kim), Victoria Adams (Roderick), Janice Manigault, Carolyn Manigault-Samuel (Jerome) and Carol Manigault; granddaughter, Zoe Alyse Claggion, a host of nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
Linda Y. Claggion was called home on May 6, 2011 at noon. She was with her children and granddaughter. She left an indelible mark on all those she met.
