OBITUARY
A FALLEN SOLDIER HOMEGOING CELEBRATION
FOR
GRANT HARDAWAY (COLEY) COLEMAN, JR.
July 10, 1934 – October 5, 2018

Grant H. Coleman, Jr. affectionately known as “Coley”, entered into eternal life on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the age of 84.
Grant H. Coleman, Jr. was born in Norfolk, Virginia on July 10, 1934 to the parents of Grant H. Coleman, Sr. and Mary Louise Jones Coleman.
Coley was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools where he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1952. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps. Subsequently leaving the Marine Corps, Grant attended Norfolk State University during the day while working nights at the United States Postal Service. He received his Bachelors Degree in Special Education from Norfolk State University and was also president of the student body. Grant was not afraid of hard work. As a young man he worked several odd jobs to make money which included working at his father’s service station, parking cars for Perry Buick dealership and caddying for golfers. Not only did Grant know how to make a dollar, he knew how to save a dollar. Grant truly loved his family and cherished his friends. He was the eldest of twelve children and everyone in the family knew who was in charge. Grant’s passion was golf but he was most proud of being an ex-marine and would tell everyone he met that he was an ex-marine.
In addition to his parents, Grant was predeceased by his three sisters Alberta Bridgers, Jacqueline Jackson, Mayme Coleman; and one brother, William Coleman. Grant leaves to cherish his memory his daughters Melody Coleman Marriner of Chesapeake, VA; Barbara Coleman Thomas of Roanoke, VA; a son, Grant H. Coleman III (Bridget) of Virginia Beach, VA; his dear friend for many years, Joycelyn Hines of Chesapeake, VA and the mother of his children, Gwendolyn Coleman of Roanoke, VA.
Other family who will cherish Grant’s legacy include four grandsons; Courtland Marriner of Chesapeake, VA; Isaiah Marriner of Portsmouth, VA; Josh Marriner of Norfolk, VA; Michael Thomas of Roanoke, VA; three granddaughters, Sonya Mills (Yoshi) of Hawaii; Kayla Thomas of Charlotte, NC; and Bailey Coleman-Cox of Hickory, NC; and one great grandson, Maverick Marriner of Chesapeake, VA. Grant leaves five sisters and two brothers who continue the Coleman legacy; Carolyn Wilson, Lorraine Cuffee (Grover); Gloria Parson of Chesapeake, VA; Sylvia Brown (James) of Washington, D.C.; Sandra Coleman of Norfolk, VA; Frissel Coleman of Norfolk, VA; Sanford Coleman of Baltimore, MD and a host of neices, nephews, cousins and friends.
