Obituary for Calvin V. Hayes

Calvin V. Hayes
Calvin “Buddy” Vincent Hayes, of Englewood, NJ departed this life on February 15, 2018. He was born in Garland, NC on July 19, 1936, to Willie Dolph and Mamie Jane (Cooper) Hayes.

During his early childhood, he migrated with his family to Norfolk, VA. There, after excelling in grade school, he began attending Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, VA with a desire to become an architect. However, after graduating high school, Calvin realized his affinity for numbers and gravitated toward studying accounting at what was then known as Norfolk State College, from where he graduated with a degree. While there, he also participated in their renowned ROTC program. Subsequent to graduating, he married his High School Sweetheart, Selena M. “Sheenie” Evans in October of 1960 and shortly thereafter moved his family to the Harlem area of New York, where there were more opportunities.

After arriving, he wanted to bolster his accounting skills and availed himself to obtaining further certification in accounting at Columbia University in New York. While doing so, he again moved his family to Brooklyn, NY, to improve the quality of life for his family. Having honed his accounting skills, he embarked upon employment and found a job, which turned into a career, at N.L. Fish & Co., in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, where he worked for over 45 years until retiring. In the mid-70’s, while working there, Calvin moved his family once again, to Englewood, NJ, which was closer to his job and was a better environment. He lived there for over forty years, until his passing. For years, before his passing and because retirement didn’t suit him, he began working at Hartstein & Hartsein Law Firm in Englewood, NJ. He was married to his wife for over fifty seven years. As you can see, he was a dedicated man, he was fully committed to everything with which he was involved.

And speaking of commitment, Calvin was devoted to the welfare of his family, particularly his children and grand-children. He was filled with wisdom and often offered sage advice to anyone who would listen. Calvin was always a hometown kind of guy, maintaining his roots in Norfolk, VA through his involvement with the New York Chapter of The Norfolk Club. Though he wasn’t big on speaking emotion, he was passionate about his family, immediate and extended, and his multitude of friends.

Anyone who knew Calvin can appreciate how much he loved to tailgate at football games, may his beloved NY Jets finally win one with him watching from above. The man we all knew was always an impeccable dresser, he prided himself in always looking sharp. He loved his family, enjoyed his friends, and was there for anyone who needed him. He will be missed, but not forgotten as he had such an indelible impact on the lives of so many people.

“Pop Hayes”, as he was also affectionately known, is survived by his Wife – Selena M. (Evans) Hayes, Sons – Antoine “Tony” Hayes (Mary) and Kevin J. Hayes (Jacquelin). A Daughter-in-Law – Zelithea “Zee” Hayes. Grandchildren – Antaj Yancey (Lidia), LaToya Louise Hayes, Maurice Gregory Hayes, Destany Amirah Hayes, Tori Lynn Hayes, and Kevin Jackie Hayes. Siblings – Lois Hayes, Linwood Hayes (Joyce), Janie T. Hayes. Great-Grandchildren – Jamari Lamont Hayes, Brandon Yancey, Austin Yancey, Armanii Bradshaw-Hayes, Layla Yancey. A Sister-in-Law – Roslyn Turner. A host of Nephews including – Roland Hayes (Nancy), Steven Hayes, Robert C. Harris, Reese Harris (Lisa), Keenan Hayes and others. Nieces – Gwendolyn Harris, Georgetta Hayes-Laury, Rita Hayes-Jackson, Michelle Bullock, Christina Hayes, Katrina Harold, Tovah Hayes, and others. A Special Niece – LaTonya Thorogood. He had an abundance of friends; each of whom he held in high esteem.

He is predeceased by his Parents; Son – Sgt. Gregory Lamont Hayes; Brothers – John, William, James (Luvenia), and Delbert Hayes. Sisters – Mary Susan and Eva (Robert).

There will be a viewing handled by Nesbitt Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, to be held at Nesbitt Funeral Home, 175 W. Englewood Ave., Englewood, NJ from 7:00PM – 9:00PM. Calvin will then be flown to Norfolk, VA, where a funeral will be handled by and held at Graves Funeral Home, located at 1631 Church St, Norfolk, VA on Saturday, February 24, 2018 beginning at 12:00PM. After interment at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, Virginia there will be a repast offered at The United House of Prayer, 1206 Church St, Norfolk, VA
